So its December, people are making merry, wedding bells are ringing and people are dancing. So my colleague decides to ‘left’ the mafisi sacco and requests that I be in the team to accompany him out of the zone, I agree and find myself in the marching squad at the church one Saturday morning. Finally I had conquered this fear of being the only one walking in front of the multitude in church. On the opposite side, I’m going to meet one amazing lady, the beautiful Meave Agoro.
Days later, we keep chatting and Meave brings up this topic of service to the community and invites me to one of the meetings of The Rotaract Club of Kisumu. Here I find them organizing for an anti-jigger campaign, I give my input and end up being tasked with the responsibility of securing Lysol, enyewe hamkuwa na huruma kwa mgeni. Unfortunately I missed this event due to work commitments and I’m left to kula kwa macho on the club Facebook page ‘The Rotaract Club of Kisumu’
On 17th Feb 2016, I decide to get registered and become a member. Coming from a humble background I understood and still understands the pain of not having in a capitalist community, this was a perfect opportunity for me to help ease the pain of some unfortunate soul out there. The journey has been amazing; from the 16 hour trip to Hoima Kitara Kingdom in Uganda where people apologise by kneeling in their hearts but repeat the same mistakes, to the amazing trips to the Rock City of Mwanza Tanzania and the Sandy beaches of Sesse Island, the smiles on the faces of the street child, to the tree planting and play with the Rabour Primary special unit, the common lunches and outs, to the serious business of keeping club records while learning about operations of Rotaract in my first year as a Rotaractor.
Rotaract has taught me COURAGE; first, while I was assigned to be the secretary, I had this fear of failure since I was fairly new to the Rotary family; however I wasn’t going to betray the trust the members had developed in me. I gathered courage and decided to take the task head-on and this far, no regrets. Secondly, when projects seem to be at the verge of failure due to low turn-up, I have learnt through Mr. President Jeff, never to despair. Gather some courage and do it, despite of the numbers.
In January 2017, I was then elected to be the president elect, a role I was hesitant to take but the then president asked me, ‘If not you, then who?’. I took a few days to think about it and figure out how RIY 2017/18 would and by the next fellowship I accepted to take up the role. I learnt so much as a president but most importantly, to involved people, delegate and trust my team.
The highlight of my time at Rotaract was when we completed the Ramula toilet project, the launch of GRC in western region at Korando Educational centre and recognition of our efforts by the country office during the Rotaract dinner in June and by the district at the DCA not forgetting being featured in the Daily Nation in mid January 2017. After a successful term as a president Dr. SK nominated me to serve as the ADRR for western region, gladly serving 11 clubs for three months before Rtr. Meltreen came to the rescue. I’m happy to see the region growing: 7 active chartered clubs 2 under revival and 7 more in-formation, I look forward to a stronger more impactful Rotaract in Western Kenya, Kenya and District 9212 as a whole.
Cheers to Rotary and Rotaract world over.
Bless!
